Description

Nembutal® Sodium Solution is a sterile injectable formulation containing pentobarbital sodium, a barbiturate with sedative and hypnotic properties. Each milliliter (mL) of the solution delivers 50 milligrams (mg) of pentobarbital sodium, dissolved in a vehicle comprising 40% propylene glycol, 10% alcohol, and water for injection. The pH of the solution is adjusted to approximately 9.5 using hydrochloric acid and/or sodium hydroxide

20-mL multiple-dose vial containing a total of 1 gram (g) of pentobarbital sodium.
50-mL multiple-dose vial containing a total of 2.5 grams (g) of pentobarbital sodium.
Indications:

Nembutal Sodium Solution is indicated for:

Sedation
Hypnosis
Preanesthetic medication
Control of convulsive disorders
Reduction of intracranial pressure in neurologic conditions
Administration and Dosage:

Dosage should be individualized based on patient-specific factors, including age, weight, and medical condition. Administration routes include intravenous (IV) or intramuscular (IM) injection. For IV use, inject slowly at a maximum rate of 50 mg per minute. For IM use, administer deeply into a large muscle mass. Consult the prescribing information for detailed dosing guidelines.

Contraindications:

Nembutal Sodium Solution is contraindicated in patients with:

Known hypersensitivity to barbiturates
History of manifest or latent porphyria
Warnings and Precautions:

CNS Depression: May cause significant central nervous system depression; monitor patients accordingly.
Respiratory Depression: Risk of respiratory depression, particularly with rapid IV administration or in patients with respiratory conditions.
Dependency and Abuse Potential: Prolonged use may lead to physical dependence; use with caution in patients with a history of substance abuse.
Storage:

Store at controlled room temperature, 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F). Protect from light and freezing. Inspect the solution visually for particulate matter and discoloration prior to administration; do not use if the solution is discolored or contains particulate matter.
